Losing Weight- how to start

I am a 34 year old professional who with a serious weight problem. Nearly 300 pounds and under 5' 6". All of my doctors tell me to lose weight, but nothing works. I work 10 hour days and am under a great deal of stress. I find myself drinking lots of soda all day long. Any advice would be appreciated.

How is your diet going?

Hi D,
We have not heard from you and were wondering how things were going? Please let us know.

I lost about 5 pounds

I took your advice and lost some weight. Have to tell you it was very hard. I realized that I was less nervous after the second week.
Now I have my own water bottle and I am learning to eat fruit. In the afternoon, I usually eat a navel orange or a banana.
What else should I be doing at this stage.

How about drinking juices instead of water?

Thanks for your advice. Can I drink orange juice or other juices instead of plain water? Seems like that would be healthy and better than soda.

Juices are not the way to go

Seth,

I would not go with juices, even the ones that are not concentrate. They tend to raise your sugar level very quickly and then leave you hungrier afterward.

Instead of fruit juice, go for the genuine article. Eat an orange, apple or grapes. At least you will be gaining the roughage, getting the unprocessed vitamin C and other healthy properties.

Build confidence first to lose weight

Seth,

Thanks for sharing. You are not alone and I understand your frustration. The secret to losng weight is a strong desire to change who you are. That requires you to take action and build your self esteem.

In your case, I think you have to work within your current regime, i.e. a stressful job and no tiime for the gym.

To lose a lot of weight will take time. Instead of a crazy crash diet, I suggest the following:

1) Maintain your current diet with one exception. Cut out entirely all soft drinks, even the diet drinks. Substitute those with nothing but water (no flavoring). Also don't compensate with something else (more ice cream) for the sugar in that soda. It will be tough and for the first 2 weeks you will feel miserable.

2) Forget the gym for now. Walk in the office. Avoid the elevator. Try walking down a floor and up. Even if it's one floor that's progress. The idea is is to get you moving. When you shop, park the car farther away from store entrance.

Do this for two weeks and let me know how you feel.
